KALINGA NAVADA

TENTH PUNYATITHI

Trend setter singer Gundmi Kalinga Navada was remembered with great love and sense of loss, at a function organised to commemorate his tenth death anniversary at 'Bhagawatha House', Gundmi.  The function was hosted by Mrs Vijayashree Navada and Kalinga Navada's son Agneya.

The full day programme on 27th May included Ganahoma, Satyanarayana Pooja, Samsmarana (Memorial speech), Talamaddale performance and a Bayalata by leading artists and thus was a fitting tribute to the great artist.

Three art personalities were honoured on the occasion.  Artist - critic- organiser H Subbanna Bhat, Talamaddale Arthadhari Aroor Sarvotham Shet. Bhagawatha Mariappachar were honoured with shawl, mementoes, tambula and a purse.

Bhagawatha Kalinga Navada is one who created history in artist popularity.  Son of great Bhagawatha, Gundmi Ramachandra Navada and disciple of another great singer Sri Narayana Uppura, and also of Sadananda Hebbar, Kalinga rose to great heights within a very short period.  As a boy he showed prodigical talent.  By the age of 18, he became a Bhagawath of a leading troupe.  Next one and a half decades he never looked back.  He was a star right from the beginning and remained so all along.  But, alas, this brilliant career with a bright future was cruelly cut short by a road accident at Udupi in which the DARLING ARTIST of lakhs of Kalabhimanis, died at the age of just 32.

Endowed with an attractive voice that had a wide range, depth and melody, Navada brought new life to yakshagana singing.  His had an excellent grip over his work. Well versed in tradition, he developed his art to height of possiblities.  In popularity as well as capacity, he can be compared with the greats of the field.  He brought in new audience to Yakshagana.  He was an asset to his troupes - the Amriteshwari Mela and the Saligrama Mela.

Speakers on the occasion of the 10th death anniversary included artistes, politicians, social leaders and well-wishers.  They fondly remembered Navada in his various aspects, his achievements, his friendliness and helpfulness and the loss caused by his very untimely death, still being felt after ten years.
