Workshops on art forms helped to identify the “black spots” in them and to have an approach for correction, said M. Prabhakara Joshi, a scholar on Yakshagana on Wednesday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on Himmela of Tenku Thittu school of Yakshagana in Yakshagana Kalakendra of Mangalore University, Mr. Joshi said that the deliberations at a workshop helped to know what is real and what is lost.

He said that Yakshagana music has its own form. Deviations in its presentations will take away the real essence.

Kishore Kumar C.K., Vice-Chancellor (in-charge), said that Yakshagana will have to be carried forward in its true form by facing modern challenges in the presentation.

Prithviraj Kavattar, a journalist-cum-Yakshagana artiste, said that the art supporting experiments in Yakshagana took time to percolate into performance. It is a slow process and indeed helped an artist to grow. All experiments should not be viewed from the point of performance.

Dhananjaya Kumble, co-ordinator, P. Dayananda Pai, and P. Satish Pai Yakshagana Adhyayana Kendra at the university, said that the workshop has shown a way for the kendra to take an initiative for video recording the correct versions of the performance.

If clippings are made available to performers on social media then it will aid professional performances. The kendra would think over it.

M.A. Hegde, chairman, Karnataka Yakshagana Academy spoke. Bottikere Purushottama Poonja, the Bhagavatha, led the workshop.

The workshop had been jointly organised by the university, the academy and Kalagangotri Yaskhagana Kendra of Someshwar-Uchil.
