We are deeply saddened about the passing away of one of the greatest Sanskrit scholars Sri Padmashri Dr. Bannanje Givindacharya.
His contribution as an authority on Madhwa Philosophy, Sanskrit poetry and poetics and on Puranas is immense Some of his works like Sarvamoola volumes (Scholarly Editing of Acharya Madhwas complete works) and commentaries on Upanishads, on works on Vedanta, are outstanding.
He was a poet of eminence in Kannada, Sanskrit, and Tulu. His scripts for films about Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya, Madhwacharya are unique in that line. He was a lover of Yakshagana a supporter of young talents and a simple person.

Very sad news of the passing of the revered poet-scholar, my friend Pt. Bannanje Govindacharya. This is a loss to Sanskrit culture and scholarship. We first met him in 1992 when he very graciously hosted us at his home and we remained in contact. Several years ago we had the pleasure of inviting him to Berkeley where he gave a learned lecture in Sanskrit on Mādhva philosophy. We have all benefitted from his generosity and learning in such works as his edition of Shri Anandatirtha’s great Mahābhāratatātparynirṇaya. He will be sorely missed. May his soul find eternal peace.
